Consulting Skills for Usability Professionals

At the 7th Annual UPA Conference (Washington DC, June, 1998) a group of about 40 participants summarized learning goals they wanted from the day-long workshop. The goals were summarized into four themes and the key points for these topics were addressed

  • How to be more effective and improve impact
  • How to get more business (external consulting) or better utilization (internal consulting)
  • How to deal with difficult clients
  • Tips and techniques in general

(Appeared in the Usability Professionals Association Publication, “Common Ground”, October 1998,volume 8, number 4)

Dynamic Dilemma Model

The framework (Dynamic Dilemma model) is dynamic in that components of the framework are responding in real time to behavior of other components – over and above any natural tendency they may have to develop change on their own. See how it is dilemma-based in that each component has its own needs and limits, not all of which can be met simultaneously, creating tricky choices concerning accommodations and optimization.
